Out of the Shadows and Silences: the Lotta Wennäkoski in Profile

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

The sheer quantity and diversity of new music being written in Finland today continues to surprise and delight critics and audiences alike. Despite such an embarrassment of riches, Kaija Saariaho appears to be the only female composer to have established an international reputation – though things are beginning to change. By now, Saariaho has become a significant role model and this case study – focussing on the compositional processes of Lotta Wennäkoski – offers evidence of a new generation of women composers in Finland whose work deserves wider attention. Although Wennäkoski’s carefully crafted output is far from prolific, it gives us a tantalizing glimpse into a compositional world that on the one hand is very particular, yet on the other is clearly representative of wider issues.
