Abstract

Considers the problems of social exclusion on deprived social housing estates and investigates the potential of one particular approach to tackling these problems, namely the; introduction of a social mix to these estates through new housing developments for owner occupation. Provides background information on the concept of social mix. Reviews the; findings of a research study which investigated the impacts of publicly sponsored owner-occupation in three deprived social housing estates in Scotland. Analyses the study; findings, focusing particularly on residents' networks and examining the potential for the owner-occupation approach to reconnect existing residents with wider society. Draws; conclusions from the study and considers the policy implications of its findings.
