Pianthology is an edition of 7 contemporary compositions for piano, containing editorial notes, fingerings, and an online recording of the pieces.
I chose these pieces from UYMP's catalogue originally as an educational project. I was interested in making a volume of pieces that would lie at 'diploma' level and which would be musically and intellectually challenging, but which would also be made approachable to students by the existence of my recordings and also by my notes about creative decisions. It had struck me that the hardest thing for performers approaching new music is the intepretative/expressive strategy; where do you start to make sense of a piece when you don't know anything about its aesthetic background?
Hence, my notes were to help in this regard. They also serve as a kind of document about the formation of my expressive strategy.
