Abstract
This chapter generates an international data base of health impact assessments (HIAs) conducted from 1999 to 2011 to get a better understanding how community health planners go about engaging the community for the goal of empirical observations. HIAs are a standardized policy assessment strategy that combines community input with a series of data sets to evaluate the health impacts of proposed and existing projects with a particular interest in reducing health inequalities. They are extensively used around the world and are recommended by the World health Organization (WHO) as the preferred methodology to assess health impacts. The planning literature provides little guidance on how planners can go about executing etic community engagement research projects. Based on our HIA research, it appears that planners have a good handle on picking relevant etic community engagement techniques with logical etic sampling strategies.
