Abstract

Discussion and analysis of hitherto unpublished glosses from the earliest glossed manuscript of Martianus Capella. Investigation of sources for a number of glosses illuminates commentators working methods (adducing relevant information from memory rather than consulting books); commentators' errors are particularly revealing. In one case they bring us close to a particular manuscript/recension of source material. Some support for the hypthesis that Martianus reached the ninth century with a layer of late antique commentary emerges.
