Abstract

This feature-length documentary followed Somali-born journalist Rageh Omaar through forbidden territory – but one still inhabited largely by small groups of university academics whose allegiances to ideas about racial hierarchies of intelligence remain strong. Omaar encounters the related problem of a liberal refusal to engage in the debate, and discusses one of the social consequences of this stand-off – that the educational underachievement of large numbers of black students in the US (and to an extent in the UK) is swept under the carpet. I directed produced, co-wrote and photographed the film.
