Abstract
A recent article in the BMJ identified Covid disruption impacting on the medical tourism industry in Malaysia. The focus on Malaysia’s experience as leitmotif for wider industry developments is fascinating, the detailed coverage and soundbites giving insight into the hopes held and challenges faced. Yet focusing on one country solely is also problematic. As long-standing researchers of medical travel, we frequently struggle to disentangle marketing and on-the-ground reality concerning present numbers and idealised projections.
