Abstract
This review outlines the common United Kingdom (UK) operational responses to ‘international’
disasters. It does so by reviewing the government’s mechanisms to respond to disasters and the
corresponding role of a selected number of UK Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
However, for this review to give a fuller picture of the role played by the UK in terms of disaster
response, it needed to take into consideration the wider multilateral roles played by the United
Nations, the Red Cross movement and the European Community Humanitarian Aid Department
(ECHO), all of which receive significant contributions from the UK.
