Ring Expansion Homologation: Synthetic Strategies and Reaction Design

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter concerns the application and design of homologation strategies to cyclic molecules in order to effect overall ring expansion. The importance of ring size in ring expansion homologation reactions is a major theme in this chapter. The chapter starts with a discussion of the key features of reactions that require specific ring sizes in order to proceed effectively. Next, reactions that operate on multiple ring sizes are covered. In view of the importance of ring expansion homologation procedures for the preparation of synthetically challenging medium-sized rings and macrocycles, methods that facilitate access to these larger ringed systems are then described. Finally, strategies that allow the rings to be “grown” to a greater degree via iterative homologation and/or higher homologation reactions are discussed.
