Abstract

The microstructural evolution and deformation behaviour of semi-solid wrought 2014 aluminium alloys have been investigated by image analysis and thermomechanical analysis. Grain size d increases with time t during annealing according to an Ostwald ripening law:

d(3) - d(o)(3) = kt.

where d(o) and k are constants. Deformation follows a constitutive equation relating the strain rate epsilon, Strain epsilon, stress sigma and solid fraction f(s):

(epsilon) over dot = epsilon(-n){sinh(b sigma)}, 0.70<f(s)<0.86

where n, b and m depend on f(s).
