N2 - Countering existing literature that characterises commuting as a relatively futile and relentless process, this paper challenges the binary opposition between the unproductive and productive, repetitive and singular, unhealthy and healthy, personal and social space by exploring the narratives of three long distance commuters and their interaction with their respective modes of transport (car, train and bike) and their motion through space. Focusing on the sensory, embodied aspects of the journey, we find that anxiety and exhaustion are intertwined with restorative, meditative experiences and open-ended associations that punctuate the home-work nexus.
