Abstract
The Ge(111)4x4-Ag reconstruction has been studied under ultra-high vacuum using STM. Images obtained from this surface are heavily dependent upon the sample bias, indicating a strong electronic component to the image contrast. A previously unknown asymmetry in the 4 x 4 unit-cell is also observed. Based on the newly acquired images a new model is proposed which has the reconstruction occurring within the top bi-layer of an unreconstructed Ge(lll) surface. An alternative model is also proposed, consisting of dimerised chains, which might give an insight into the observed asymmetry.
