Abstract
Matthias Ruth contends that although industrial ecology - a systems view of industrial processes - has given strong attention to product and technology-related issues, it rarely addresses requirements for humans to effectively process information and generate new knowledge that is needed to promote sustainable practices in a complex system of interrelated activities and interacting businesses. He explains how businesses can improve operations by capitalizing on the collective knowledge of their human resources.
