N2 - Functionalized macrocycles and medium-sized rings have important applications in countless applied scientific fields, but they can be challenging to make using traditional synthetic methods. In this chapter, we provide an overview and perspective on current strategies for the synthesis of heterocyclic macrocycles and medium-sized rings. We start by summarizing the state of the art in high dilution and pseudo-high dilution methods. We then go on to detail methods for which high dilution is not required that take advantage of conformational and/or template effects. Ring-expansion methods are also covered, and finally, medium-sized ring synthesis is treated separately.
