Abstract

This study empirically examines the practices and tools leveraged in two manufacturing companies to manage the structural and dynamic complexity in their internal SCs. Moreover, the study adopts a qualitative case study methodology to investigate the interplay (i.e. mechanisms of interaction) between structural and dynamic complexity factors. Three areas of interplay are identified and the implications and management of these interactions between factors are discussed. In addition, the use of individual practices to address dynamic and structural product portfolio, internal SC and external SC complexity factors is presented and a classification of complexity management practices is proposed.
