Abstract
There are potential benefits from globalization in system safety engineering, including raising standards and facilitating international trade in products and services. However there are obstacles to globalization, including differences in risk acceptance criteria in different countries and industries, and differences in legal frameworks. The paper sets out a brief analysis of the potential benefits and problems of globalization, and draws conclusions on what might be done to work towards greater harmonization, if not globalization, of practices in system safety engineering.
