Abstract

This paper presents an interdisciplinary approach to sys- tematically analyzing the technical-functional and musical-aesthetical relations between musical instruments. Using a cultural-historical discourse analysis, we compiled a database covering 135 of the most influential electronic and digital instruments and their respective func- tional and aesthetical properties. These data have then been quantified and further analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, yielding insights into the historical dynamics of the design and reception of electronic musical instruments throughout the 20th century.
