Abstract

This article reviews the surviving material and documentary evidence for the patronage, meaning, use and destruction of devotional images in the late medieval English parish church. The article provides a critical appraisal of medieval archaeology's potential to contribute to wider interdisciplinary scholarship on devotional and commemorative practices, the rise of a literate and devotionally-engaged laity, and the impact of early modern iconoclasm on the devotional topography of the late medieval parish church.
