Abstract
The Online Orchestra is a research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The objective is to use the internet to give children and amateur musicians who live in remote communities around the country the same opportunities to play in an orchestra as those who live in larger towns and cities. The Online Orchestra will allow people who live hundreds of miles apart to make music together for the first time. This paper describes the audio/visual systems design and integration for the Online Orchestra. The audio streaming solutions, network architecture and latency stabilising system developed specifically for distributed network performance of orchestral music are discussed in detail. The complexities inherent in composing for latency rich environments and the tools developed for the composers to simulate these conditions are also examined.
