Abstract

The biorefinery of the future will integrate a series of (bio)chemical processes and technologies of low-environmental impact. In this regard, heterogeneously catalyzed reactions will play a major role in the processing of the so-called platform molecules to valuable chemicals, biofuel precursors, and energy by means of aqueous-phase processing and environmentally sound methodologies. In this chapter, the role of heterogeneous catalysis in the biorefinery of the future will be discussed with regard to biofuels and platform chemicals production and/or transformations in a future renewable-based scenario.
