Abstract
Arising in part from an ongoing research project into declamation, music, and Irish poetry, Tracce takes as its text a Synge translation (highly idiomatic, very Irish, and not at all literal) of a Petrarch sonnet that was set by Monteverdi and Marenzio, among others. An analysis (being prepared for publication) of the Monteverdi setting provided both structure and materials for Tracce; an analysis of Synge's text suggested the gestural quality; and my long-standing study of the phonetic representation of vocal technique informed the notation.
