Under the same roof: an international comparison of multigenerational families and children’s mathematics achievement

Abstract

This exploratory comparative study uses international data to examine the
educational implications for children who live in multigenerational households
in 18 countries. Results from the Third International Math and Science Study
(TIMSS) indicate that 4th and 8th graders in multigenerational families’ exhibit
lower mathematics achievement compared with 4th- and 8th- graders in nuclear
families. However, results show that in most TIMSS countries, living with
grandparents often confer educational disadvantage to children. In many TIMSS
countries, including the United States, grandparent’s presence in the household
compensates for the absence of both parents.
