Abstract
This essay is the first instalment of a larger project: to write, from archival sources, a biography of Achille-Cléophas Flaubert. It covers the early years, from 1784 to 1802, when Achille-Cléophas Flaubert arrived in Napoleon's Paris to begin work as a medical student. It takes three themes: AchilleCléophas Flaubert's experience of the Revolution both in Nogent and in Sens, his elective affinity for Voltaire, and — beyond this individual life — the characteristic 'structure of feeling' of that generation of physicians who presided over the emergence of modern clinical medicine.
