Abstract
Two internationally recognized research groups are working jointly at the University of York, UK, to establish the Biorenewables Development Center (BDC). The BDC is a non-profit company that supports the industry in the development and scale-up of new technology for converting plants and wastes into high value products through bio-refining. Joe Ross, Director of the BDC states that an increasing demand for renewable and bio-based feed-stocks is emerging as industries realize that they need sustainable sources for their raw materials. The company is emerging as part of the drive towards a bio-based economy where fuel, chemicals, and materials are derived from renewable resources. The country has realized the importance of renewable chemicals to its economy and is making efforts to emerge as one of the top three producers of chemicals from plants where wastes will be an important feedstock for such renewable chemicals.
