Prof. Piran Crawfurd Limond White

Research interests

Piran's research is focused in two principal areas: (1) the conservation of biodiversity, ecosystem function and ecosystem services and (2) wildlife ecology, conservation and management. Much of this work involves the use of interdisciplinary approaches from the social and economic sciences alongside more traditional ecological research. His grant income includes funding from NERC, ESRC, the UK Research Councils RELU programme, Defra and the EU.  He is Deputy Director of the NERC-funded Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BESS) Directorate. He is a co-investigator on the Big Lottery-funded OPAL project, which is focused around community engagement in biodiversity monitoring and was formerly coordinator of the ESRC transdisciplinary seminar series on coastal wetland ecosystem services. His previous research on two contracts for Defra between 2003 and 2007 informed the development of the ecosystems approach in the UK. He is currently leading a Defra project on modelling and mapping ecosystem service interactions and is working with Natural England on the development of an ecosystem services transfer tool for upland and lowland landscapes, as well as an interactive online resource of ecosystem service mapping projects. He is also working on a Scottish Government-funded project to assess the cost-effectiveness of biodiversity conservation measures in Scotland.
